FIRE AT UCT: MEMORIES AND ASSOCIATIONS
Hugh Amoore, Howard Phillips, Tanya Barben, Geoffrey de Wet
On Sunday 18 April a fire that started on the mountain above Philip Kgosana Drive soon blazed out of control and, driven by strong winds, reached the University of Cape Townʼs Rondebosch campus. The Jagger Reading Room was destroyed and the HW Pearson Building, and Fuller and Smuts Hall student residences were damaged. Emeritus Professor Howard Phillips, former Registrar Hugh Amoore, senior librarian Tanya Barben and Geoffrey de Wet, former director of the Physical Planning Unit at UCT, discuss some of the history as well as the memories and associations attached to these beloved buildings.
