VAN ZYL SLABBERT (1940–2010): EXPLAINING THE CHARISMA OF A WHITE ANTI-APARTHEID POLITICIAN

Emeritus Professor Albert Grundlingh, former Head of History Department, Stellenbosch University

The lecture will provide a brief overview of Slabbert’s life and his career. He was a Progressive Federal Party member of parliament from 1974 and leader of the opposition till his resignation in 1986. He subsequently played a role in extra-parliamentary politics but did not loom large in official politics after the 1994 transition in South Africa. The main thrust of the lecture will be to explain his charismatic appeal to white voters during his parliamentary days.
