DEMITRIOS TSAFENDAS: MADNESS, RACE AND POLITICS

When Demitrios Tsafendas assassinated South African prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd on 6 September 1966, the writer Dan Jacobson described it as ‘a moment in the history of the country when the power of madness and the madness of power converged’. This talk will explore how this event places madness at the heart of South African history.
