THE GIANTS OF SCIENCE

Emeritus Professor David Wolfe, physicist

Discoveries in physics have made huge changes in our way of living. Just in this century the discovery of the transistor and the laser have completely changed the way we live. From radio and mobile phones to medical devices, from the X-ray to machines such as the MRI, the effects have been enormous. Despite the thousands working in various science fields, there have been a few giants who have made revolutionary changes in our thinking and, therefore, in society. Newton created modern science, virtually single-handedly. Michael Faraday discovered the fundamentals of all the electricity we use. James Clerk Maxwell took the ideas of Faraday and gave them their proper mathematical clothing. He discovered the collection between electricity and light. Marie Curie is responsible for radioactivity and Albert Einstein created the revolution in thought that has made the technology of the twentieth century possible.
