THE MARTIANS OF SCIENCE

Emeritus Professor David Wolfe, physicist

In Hungary, after the First World War, an exceptional generation of Jewish scientists grew up, all of whom left at a young age, and all of whom contributed enormously to the downfall of Nazi Germany. They were so amazingly different and intelligent that there was a joke that they came from Mars. There were some nineteen of them in maths, chemistry, physics and economics. We will discuss those who worked in physics, work which eventually led to the discovery of nuclear fission and the construction of the atomic bomb. They were a truly remarkable group.
