TRANSFORMING THE FUTURE OF THE SPEAKER: ON THE MAKING OF THE TRILINGUAL DICTIONARY OF KAAPS
Professor Quentin Williams, Centre for Multilingualism and Diversities Research (CMDR), University of the Western Cape; Professor Adam Haupt, Centre for Film and Media Studies, University of Cape Town
This lecture series will explore the Trilingual Dictionary of Kaaps (TDK) project, which launched in July 2021. As a descriptive corpus project, we hope that the dictionary will be an important linguistic resource and that it will elevate the functions of Kaaps, particularly in relation to teaching and learning.
Key themes of this series that will be discussed include: recentring and empowering Kaaps speakers through mediatisation and lexicography and unpacking the lexicographical process of Kaaps data sources (all relevant modalities, platforms, genres, practices, performances, interactions and linguistic landscapes). It will also discuss the production of the dictionary as an open educational resource that will support social and academic literacy practices in the education, religious, cultural, political and economic spheres of our democratic society, and decolonial debates about cultural appropriation and racial and linguistic stereotyping.
