IN CONVERSATION - John Mattison

Author and columnist John Matisonn will be in conversation with journalist Gwen Lister about her new memoir, Comrade editor – on life, journalism and the birth of Namibia (Tafelberg, 2021). Gwen Lister’s career on the frontline of what used to be considered South Africa’s ‘fifth province’ parallels the history of her adopted country. She left South Africa immediately after graduating from the University of Cape Town to spend the rest of her life in South West Africa, later to become Namibia, first as a political reporter and later as the founder and editor of the path-breaking Namibian newspaper. She faced the wrath first of the South African apartheid government and later the independent government of Namibia. Her principled rejection of the post-independence gravy train led her to reject an offer of a cabinet seat as Minister of Information, as the head of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation and even a farm. Instead she continued to fly the flag of a free press shining a spotlight on the successes and failings of the new regime.
